A full set of extensions is only half the result. The other half is the fourteen days that follow, and that part happens without your lash artist in the room. Almost every set that falls apart early falls apart for one of the same ten reasons.

1. Getting them wet in the first 24 hours

Lash adhesive keeps curing after you leave the appointment. Steam, sweat, and water during that first day interrupt the cure and weaken every bond at once. Skip the workout, the sauna, and the long hot shower on day one.

2. Using an oil-based cleanser or makeup remover

Oil is the single fastest way to dissolve a bond. That includes coconut oil, most micellar waters, cleansing balms, and a surprising number of "gentle" eye makeup removers. Read the ingredient list, not the front of the bottle.

3. Not cleansing at all

The opposite mistake, and the more common one. People are so afraid of disturbing the extensions that they stop washing their lash line entirely. Oil, makeup, and dead skin build up at the base, the bond degrades from underneath, and the follicle gets irritated. A dedicated foaming lash cleanser two or three times a week is the fix.

4. Sleeping face-down

Eight hours a night of your lashes pressed into a pillow will out-argue any adhesive. Side or back sleeping extends a set noticeably. A silk or satin pillowcase reduces the drag if you cannot change position.

5. Rubbing your eyes

Rubbing pulls extensions out and takes natural lashes with them. If your eyes itch consistently after a set, that is worth mentioning to your artist rather than working around.

6. Using a lash curler

Extensions come with their own curl built in. A mechanical curler crimps and snaps them, and it stresses the natural lash underneath. There is no version of this that ends well.

7. Waterproof mascara

Most people do not need mascara over extensions at all. If you wear it, waterproof is the wrong choice, because removing it requires exactly the oils and friction that break bonds.

8. Waiting too long between fills

Natural lashes shed on their own cycle, so a set thins gradually and unevenly. Past a certain point a fill becomes a new full set, which costs more and takes longer. Two to three weeks is the usual window.

9. Picking at them

A single grown-out extension is tempting to pull. It is attached to a natural lash that is not ready to go, and pulling takes both. If one is bothering you, it can be removed properly in seconds.

10. Trimming them yourself

Extensions are tapered. Cutting one leaves a blunt end that looks obviously artificial and cannot be undone without a removal. Length is a conversation to have before the set, not after.

How long should a set actually last?

With the habits above, most clients go two to three weeks before a fill and keep a set looking full the entire time. Without them, the same set can look patchy inside of one week - and that is almost never the application.
